The big bass on Lake Fork are in a feeding frenzy! The lake has been HOT the last few days. I fished with Aaron and Travis from Allen, Texas yesterday and we had 25+ bass. We did not catch any under 4 lbs with two 8 lbers topping the stringer. It was a lot of fun and a day of fishing that I know they will remember.
The lake is in awesome shape at a little over 4 feet low but the water conditions are great. Lots of beautiful clear water and great water temps in the low 60’s for catching lots of bass. The bite has been great both shallow and deep. In the shallows I am throwing a square bill or lipless crank bait in any shad pattern in 2-6 ft of water. A white chatter bait or Berkley Hollow belly swim bait has also been great in the same areas on cloudy and windy frontal days. There are also a lot of fish out deep that are active right now. The big schools of shad and bar fish(yellow bass) are plentiful and the big Lake Fork bass are actively pursuing them as the water cools and they feel an urgency to feed up for winter. These fish are literally gorging themselves on everything in sight and it’s a whole lot of fun when you get on an active school of fish. Best depths to look for them to hanging out are 20-28 ft right now. My go to baits have been a Carolina rigged Berkley Havoc Hawk Hawg, Talon jigging spoons & football jigs, and Berkley Powerbait Swim shads.
Now is the time to head out to Lake Fork if you are in pursuit of a trophy bass before winter sets in. It’s a great time to have the lake to yourself with very little fishing pressure on the water. I still have some dates available if you decide to head out for some big fish fun. I will also be running some winter trips in December and January on Lake Monticello. These trips are a whole lot of fun and we have been catching lots of big bass there. Also, don’t forget to book your spring reservations soon if you are thinking of planning a trip in 2013. My dates are already filling fast and you will not want to wait until the last minute for a guide or lodging.
